I'm giving this three stars on the condition that readers understand this is not a horror, at all. It doesn't even qualify for suspense. It's a wholly miscategorized book. If you are interested in women's role in Japanese society as it relates to motherhood, career, and filial piety - you might enjoy this. I don't think it's the best book I've read on those topics, but it certainly goes deeper into those than anything close to the genres it claims to be.
Even if I ignore the poor marketing of this book however, it didn't really land for me. The plot development was uneven and often the choices made by two of the lead characters made no sense to me. There were also bits set up for tension that ultimately went no where.
For difficulty it was quite typical for both grammar and vocab for a basic (not super literary) novel. Nothing to catch learners off guard in this book.
