Crónicas de la Torre is Better
I'll probably finish the series just because it was such a big cultural phenomenon in Spain and because I plan on watching the anime, but I much prefer Gallego's other series, Crónicas de la Torre. That series had a bit of a weak introduction as well, but the last book was amazing, so I'm hoping this series eventually picks up. For now, it feels like a more juvenile version of Twilight, which isn't really my thing. Lots of twists and turns, though I feel much of it could have been condensed.
As always, Gallego's prose is clear, accessible, and pleasant to read, making it ideal for language learning, though at the expense of more complex worldbuilding and environmental descriptions, which can feel a bit sparse, a common criticism of her style.
