[DeepL Translation - needs review] My favorite grandmother was a real witch. Her power to live was also real. Soon after entering junior high school, Mai, a girl who just couldn't go to school anymore, spent a month or so under the care of the Witch of the West as the season changed to early summer. (3.30/5)I know this is a very well-loved book that's very popular, and many people find a lot of meaning in it. I found it incredibly boring and tedious though. It's an easy story, and there's not a lot of specialised vocabulary. The plot stays largely in the same place and talks about the same things repeatedly, so it's probably a good book for lower level readers. And if slice-of-life children's books that try and make you feel sad is your thing, this should do the trick.
Poignant
This was a poignant and well-written book. It packed a punch for something so short. I understood the Japanese well for the most part, but the I found the two or three more philosophical conversations in it a bit difficult. I definitely recommend the book though! It's good for N3-N2 learners.
Simple and Easy to Read
This was a very short (roughly 200 page) novel with large font and clear and simple language.
The story wasn't anything amazing or ground breaking, but it was heartwarming and bitter sweet and I loved it!
A fantastic, beautiful read that's great for JLPT N3+ readers.
Note that there is a 2017 edition that contains 3 extra short stories related to the main one but is apparently missing one such short story that was included in the original edition. I'm not sure if the publisher decided to not include that original short story so that people will try to get both editions...

Her grandmother taught Mai a lot about life and what it means to be a witch back then but now she is dying.
This novel somehow reminded me of a Ghibli film with all its descriptions of the beauty of everyday life and the wor
