A harder volume to read emotionally

This was a difficult volume to rate in terms of entertainment and overall rating. Volume 5 picks up immediately where volume 4 left off, with (end of vol. 4 spoilers) Kaito being accused of murder and taken off to jail. My real rating is probably closer to a 3.5 than a 3, but I rounded down since I'd be more likely to pick up previous volumes to re-read first than this one due to some of the stuff that our protagonist goes through this volume.

We get a lot of great character moments here, and some extremely interesting plot points are raised for the first time in the volume that I have no doubt will have some interesting reverberations in future books. (Spoiler hint for those interested: anyone remember Kazuya?) Kaito has the opportunity for growth, both in his personal relationships and how he adapts himself to the past, and Geoffrey and Nigel get some time to shine as a pair.

But on the other hand, this book contained scenes that made me feel slightly queasy as I read. Nothing incredibly hardcore or anything, but if you have difficulty reading things related to torture, I would advise you to tread cautiously and not be afraid to skip small sections as needed. I ended up reading everything, but it took me longer than usual for sure because of this.

Though this book, like the previous one, clocks in somewhere north of 200 pages, it goes by really quickly; the author 松岡なつき has a knack for writing intense scenes with quite a bit going on. It does let you enjoy the quieter moments when they appear, however; those moments ended up being some of my favorites in the book.
