(3.53/5)Read along with the WK book club.
Language wise it’s definitely approachable and there are book club threads to ask any questions in.
Content wise, I didn’t really like this one due to the pronounced gender roles. Tamamo really does just want to be a perfect magical housewife who cooks and cleans all day. I preferred some of the past easy romance manga the club has read like Shikimori’s Not Just Cute. But if you’re looking for something mindless and fluffy this book is for you.
Sometimes I want fantastic world building and exciting, deep stories that surprise me at every turn, making me guess what will happen next. Other times I just want something that's easy to read and sweet as sugar. And Tamamo, kitsune turned maid, definitely delivers on the sweetness front.
Pros:
- Cute art
- Full furigana
- Easy to read
- An adorable fox-eared protagonist
Cons:
- Predictable story
- Feels a bit too fast (probably due to only being one volume)
- Tamamo felt a bit too pushy in the beginning
From a language learner's perspective this was not very hard. If you've read other mangas around L20, you will probably be right at home. Tamamo has some easy to figure out speech quirks, and there are a few religious words scattered here and there, but that's nothing that can't be fixed with a few dictionary lookups.
In the end, Tamamo no Koi is a pretty standard fox girl meets boy story, and doesn't try to be more. And I wasn't looking for anything more. I wanted something cute to relax with, and that's exactly what I got.

This is a pretty light hearted and cute manga, with its main draw being the cute fox girl. Language wise, it includes some religious vocabulary alongside some more day to day life stuff.
I'm not really into these types of romance manga and wouldn't have read it if not for the bookclub, so I can't really say much there. The art style is pretty cute, though.
