Laura's family has just moved to a farm in the countryside, and she is overjoyed to finally have her very own pony. The owner of the local bookshop is a mysterious old lady who gives her a gift to welcome her to the town: a book about unicorns. As she reads, she learns that young unicorns can only gain their powers if a special transformation spell is cast, and until that day comes, they look like ordinary little grey ponies. Just like her pony...
I enjoyed reading this - it's a simple, magical story that moves quickly, and at just over 100 pages, it doesn't take long to read. The first volume is about Laura adopting(?) and befriending Sternenschweif, setting up the story for the adventures to come. The series is aimed at children, so the language is relatively simple, although there's some vocabulary relating to ponies and magic that are a little more unusual.
The original title of the series is My Secret Unicorn, by British writer Linda Chapman. Interestingly, her work seems more popular internationally than at home: there are only 15 books published in the series in English, but 80 in German! Also, her website looks like it was designed in the 90s, and I love it.
If you like ponies and/or unicorns, and want something simple enough for a beginner to read, I'd recommend it!
