Although this is nominally a spinoff series from the author's Tokyo Bandwagon series, there isn't actually any link or referencing of that series except the very minor point that one of the characters here shares a surname with the family in that series. So you can read this as a standalone Edo period historical story with a fantasy element, without missing out on anything.
