So you could call this book an adult coming-of-age story or a mid-life crisis story with a bit of fantasy thrown in. It resembles most of what you'd find in the feel good category, especially the tropes specific to japanese fiction, and it tries hard to give some philosophical advices to its characters and thus its readers.
I don't quite connect with some of those advices, and find the characters' objections to be brushed off too easily. Though I suppose they are there more for entertainment and not expected to be taken too seriously.
Anyway this is readable but immediately forgettable, in the same genre I'd rather read 青山美智子.
I don't have much to say regarding the language. I wouldn't recommend it for a first book (the sentences can be a bit long and complex sometimes) but otherwise it uses very standard neutral and polite speech that you will encounter everywhere. There is very little casual/rough speech.
