The language is generally straightforward, with some specialized vocabulary related to あん preparation.
Probably not my type of novel, but it is unique in some ways. Took me a while to finish because I found it a bit tedious at times, but I did learn a few historical things about leprosy in Japan and found that interesting.
The message behind the story is also decent.
