[DeepL Translation - needs review] I am only in the fourth grade of elementary school, but I already know as much as an adult. I take good notes every day and read a lot of books. One day, penguins suddenly appeared in the suburb where I live. When I learn that the mysterious power of the dentist's sister is involved in this strange incident, I decide to study the mystery... The world that the boy sees expands infinitely every day. Winner of the 31st Japan Science Fiction Grand Prize.

(3.92/5)An charming, fairly easy read
A note: I listened to the audiobook version of this book.
I enjoyed this book quite a lot. The protagonist comes across very much as a precocious little kid, but in a way that is charming most of the time and makes for an entertaining viewpoint into this fairly chilled out story with its mysteries that the main character is earnestly determined to solve. I will agree with the other review that in the second half there is a lot of おっぱい talk - but it doesn’t get in the way too much. I listened t
Bit of fantasy wrapped up in the language of a scientifically minded kid. I'm definitely not the intended audience which I suspect is probably 8-12 year old boys (given the frequent rumination on boobs and other aspects of the humor in this book). If I never see or hear "大変" again, it will be too soon.
I bought this before I started Tatami Galaxy, and between when I realized they were by the same author and when I made an account on here, I worried this would be as difficult a read. Turns out I should have feared them being similar in another way.
I don't know if having an insufferable, obnoxious, utterly dislikable MC/narrator is a feature of Morimi's novels or if I'm just unlucky, but the MC in this sure is. Right off the bat, I didn't particularly like him, but I decided to keep reading an
A captivating blend of mystery, friendship and some sci-fi elements.

Don’t be fooled by the presence of penguins
