One of the strangest books I’ve ever read. At times, it’s reminiscent of a light novel, but it remains very experimental and firmly literary (it even won the 三島由紀夫文学賞, though the judges were apparently quite divided). It’s the kind of book that each reader will experience differently, but it unfortunately didn’t work for me at all.
I personally found the experimental sections difficult to get through and often felt pulled out of the narrative due to the author’s stylistic choices, such as repeating the same words for an entire page or using extra-large fonts for some text. There were also moments when I had no idea what was happening or why, making it hard to care about the characters. Although everything concluded neatly, by that point, I was no longer invested. Despite that, the book had some good ideas and lines throughout, and I respect the author's creativity, so I give it two stars.
Based on a hunch, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed “random” anime from the early 2000s like FLCL. It has a similar vibe and explores coming-of-age themes. Maybe you’ll enjoy it more than I did!
