This story ran ahead of (and then concurrently with) the anime, and as a result it is not just a mangafication, but a separate version crafted from the same elements. (The manga released in January, April, and July 2006; the anime ran from April through September).
While I found some of the sentences a bit hard to understand at times (and plan to reread), the story itself was very solid, and took itself as seriously and elegantly as the anime does. It is essentially an alternate telling of アーエル and ネヴィリル's story, featuring アーエル, ネヴィリル, パライエッタ, ロードレアモン, マミーナ, and one unnamed pilot. The essence of the characters is very similar, and the couplings are the same... but at the same time the vibe is a bit different. This version is more emotionally direct and confrontational, less avoidant. I really loved the art style as well, and like the anime there is very little lowest-common-denominator fan service.
I wouldn't say it's a must read, but it's a very thoughtful, well-written story that stands on its own. I definitely enjoyed it :)
