A great tale from the peak era of shonen battle manga
Golden Gash (I can see why they called it Zatch Bell in the west), is a solid, entertaining coming-of-age tale about the relationships we develop and the influence we have on one-another, nestled in the backdrop of a battle-royale style tournament to decide who will be King of the Demon World.
Takamine Kiyomaro is a genius middle schooler. He's arrogant, and because of that, he has no friends. His father-an archeologist working in England-sends a mysterious child his way in the hopes of helping him. The child, Gash Bell, carries with him a strange red book filled with illegible text, that, when understood and read aloud by Kiyomaro, activates the boy's latent abilities.
If you're comfortable with reading Shonen battle manga, or sit around the N3/N2 level, you'll find this to be a comfortable difficulty. I can only speak for myself though, and I find that I only need to look up a couple of words here or there depending on what's happening. Gash speaks in a sort of regal dialect (samurai-esque) that may be challenging if you're not used to it, but easy enough to work around and figure out.
All in all, a great ride with some surprisingly impactful moments and some absolutely smashing panels! Worth the read for certain!
