This is a compact and convenient guide to learning the Kansai dialect of the Japanese language

Maido, maido and welcome to the Kansai region of western Japan. Whether visiting or living in this area, you will quickly notice the locals aren't speaking standard Japanese taught in textbooks and classrooms. The language on the streets is Kansai-ben: a dialect said to be earthier and more direct, but with its own polite language. With clear explanations of grammar, a Kansai-ben dictionary, and a ...

Excellent book, get the physical if you can

Excellent book - though the Kindle version is めっちゃごちゃごちゃ!The JP font is terrible, and there's endless typos due to poor OCR - so ironically, the romaji ends up being a really useful reference.

If you're looking for a similar JP textbook, I recommend しゃべってみなはれ 大阪弁 is great!

Great starter guide to 関西弁

"Colloquial Kansai Japanese" covers 60 of the most common dialectal vocabulary words and grammar patterns found in 関西弁; the text will note which part of the 関西 area the term in question is most commonly used in, as well as usage differences among 関西 locales. Examples sentences are plentiful, as are natural-sounding English translations. Example conversations are broken down sentency-by-sentence, and there's a handy dictionary in the back of all terms covered.

In between sections of vocab and grammar are shorter "special interest" chapters, covering such topics as regional food and the Hanshin Tigers, with any specialized vocabulary noted as well. (The authors actually include the lyrics to the Hanshin Tigers' theme song, which I thought was really neat.) The writers have a great sense of humor throughout, generally pushing the "Tokyo-Osaka" rivalry bit; you can really feel their love for 関西弁.

My biggest complaint with this book is the pervasive use of romanization throughout, shown first in any examples given. While this might have been acceptable in a more beginner-oriented book, Colloquial Kansai Japanese does seem to expect the reader to know very basic 標準語 before reading (N5-N4), and at that point the reader shouldn't need romaji.
