As a children's book it is written in hiragana, but uses more complex words. The story of フレデリック is about a mouse who doesn't do physical work collecting food for winter in order to gather words for the long winter and the other mice get angry at him. When winter comes フレデリック reveals his purpose. The poetic language here is more complex than that of regular children's books and while it is still short, it is was significantly more difficult than others of its kind.
