The personalities and possibly to some more importantly decks are different from the anime version. I don't think the cast comes across as quite as likeable in this volume as the anime, but as a complementary material and an alternate version it's pretty good. For example Manjoume is a much more generically "cool" character so far (he is my fave so I was a bit sad). The mangaka even mentions that he thought the anime version would be too hard to write. Still, they're recognizeable. The duels are decently fun, I think I even prefer to read them in manga because it is easier to follow, and I like that you can read the full description of the cards when they are used (most of the time). Language wise there is a lot of "terms" you get frontloaded with if you're not familiar with yugioh game vocab in japanese. Afterwards the difficulty is mostly in understanding exactly what is going on in duels and card effects. It kind of feels like good practice, as if you misunderstood some part the duel will stop making sense at some point so you have to go back and correct yourself (or not, even if you dont udnerstand the duel fully , the story beats within the duels are obvious)
Recommended for people who like yugioh gx, and don't mind a bit of derivation from the anime. Otherwise I don't think you'd get anything out of this. It definitely doesn't explain the basics of the game from the scratch or anything, it assumes you already know the game, and possibly even the characters.
