(4.03/5)The First Manga I Read Without a Translation App
I have been self-studying Japanese for almost seven years, but I had never been able to finish an entire manga without using a translation app—until now. The story is simple and enjoyable, and the grammar isn’t too difficult. I definitely recommend this to all beginners!
Cute and fun
While I stumbled my way through a previous Wani Kani book club and learned a lot, this is the first manga I can safely say I actually read with the help of the Wani Kani book club. A very nice level of grammar and vocabulary and really cute art and stories.
I still think about the tower of animals to scare the humans and laugh.
If you're debating trying a Wani Kani book club I really recommend starting with this one.
Great introduction to native material
After finding よつばと!I decided to look for something easier and stumbled upon the WaniKani book club for this manga. I found the vocabulary and grammar easy to understand and having extra resources was massive help. The characters and their antics are also quite cute so you will stay entertained.
Super cute and a great first manga
The manga itself is super cute, but as others have said, not much is happening. But this is why it’s a great manga for first timers. The vocabulary is fairly easy — I’m on level 13 of WK and finished Genki 1 — and did not have to look up loads.
Very cute beginner's manga!
If you want to read an easy manga and like “Cute Girls Doing Cute Thing” type of stories, you’ll definitely enjoy your time with オオカミちゃん! The plot is very simple and most unknown vocabulary you’ll probably be able to guess the meaning when you look at the pictures. I was half way through Genki 1 when I picked this up, and it was about the perfect level for me!
Like any story, though, the beginning vocabulary will take a while to get, especially since Ookami-chan’s goals / work cover the sort of vocabulary I’d doubt you'd learn at a very early level on your own. (unless you have very specific interests?) But since those stay pretty much the same throughout this, you’ll be able to get a grasp of it quickly and it’ll get way easier to identify what she’s talking about past the first chapter!
You probably won't gain too much in language learning if you've already read a couple of slice of life manga, but as a first one it's very good for introducing terms in a comprehensible way and repeating most common terms later on.
Speaking of beginner vocab, the first page is a bit hard compared to the rest of the manga. Feel free to skip or to just read someone else’s translations if you get stuck. The rest of it will be way easier!
It's also extremely adorable! Even when I felt like “Agh… I’m not in the mood, so I’ll just read one panel today.” The cuteness got to me, and I would end up reading at least a full page if not more! (and if you feel the same and want to read something similar, I find the けものフレンズコミックアラカルト comics are around the same level of difficulty (with the exception of having more speech quirks) and have a lot of the same kemonomimi cuteness!)
extremely boring
my first ever native book. at first, i found it very fun and read for hours because i was so excited to read something native in japanese, but for me it quickly turned extremely boring when the charm wore off. nothing meaningful happens so i never was motivated to read and never did. but the art is super nice <3
i did learn a lot of new grammar points though, it's a perfect level for any beginner and will give confidence to anyone who gave up on よつばと. despite the boring story, while i was interested, i did learn a lot!
if you like cute anime stuff, maybe you'll actually enjoy it, but i think any beginner should try it as a first step into native books
This is a great manga for upper beginners who have a basic grasp on grammar and want to jump into native content. The plotlines of each chapter are easy to follow and the majority of the vocab is nice and simple. I'm currently level 13 on WK and with some help from the vocab lists from the WK absolute beginner bookclub, I felt this was quite an easy read. My main critique is that the story itself was a little dull so I sometimes had to force myself to keep reading, but it was worth it for how much it has helped to build my reading confidence.
Good manga for beginners. It was easy to understand what's going on even without looking up unknown vocabulary. It also helped that the chapters are self-containing. I was around level 10 on wanikani while reading this but you could pick it up earlier.
For the "story": It was cute and that's it. I had to force myself to finish it tbh (⌒_⌒;) Still, I would recommend it for the learning experience!
Cute and relaxing
I loved reading this manga. Each chapter is about what this wolf gets up to with her friends in the forest that day. I can imagine this is in the genre of "healing" manga that are just relaxing to read. That means if you really want story development, though, you won't find it here.
I picked this up on a whim to join the WK book club even though I had started more difficult books and manga. I'm glad I did! I wasn't previously a manga enthusiast, but this helped me to see that the art work can be enjoyable and my reading level is good enough to read for entertainment. The vocab is very every day which is fantastic; the dialogue is all easy to understand and any names are obvious.
I would recommend this to someone who wants to read their first manga (full furigana), or for someone who would like to read something that is easy and that doesn't feel like studying.
It's not especially deep and it doesn't really have a plot, but it is very cute and very easy to read.
Full furigana, simple words and grammar, no casual language, no baby talk, and only one (rarely appearing) character that has speaking style that is a little bit harder - this is my recommendation for a first manga. There's a WK book club too if you have any questions!
cute, easy read
I would recommend this book to everyone wanting to read their first manga in Japanese or needing to change their Japanese reading up with something easy they can just brush through. It's awfully cute and the language is very easy to understand.
I would not recommend this to someone who has read a lot of native material before (and doesn't need a sweetness overload) because if it wasn't for the language part, I probably would have been bored by this manga very much
"if you're in it for the story, you're gonna get disappointed" kind of feeling nevertheless I enjoyed it because it gave me a sense of accomplishment because I was able to go through it fairly easily and still feel like I did some "Japanese reading"

Very good first manga to read for beginners.
Short, cute, wholesome, fun and have very easy vocabulary and grammar. Perfect for beginners wanting to start reading manga. I would recommend this one over something like よつばと!because i'ts easier and shorter, so for a beginner's first manga, it's perfect.
If you like cute characters doing cute and fun things with lots of wholesome moments in a very relaxing setting, this is for you.
