The ugly duckling but tragic and kind of beautiful. I was interested in reading this after seeing it referenced several times in a novel and it seemed like somewhat expected that Japanese people would be familiar with the story.
No old kana nor any old kanji that I noticed, but if you're not good with bird names you'll need to look up a few.

As an adult I had reservations but ultimately liked it, but the repetition of やけてしんでもかまいません is not what I want the juvenile audience to hear, especially not if they're being bullied. If you haven't read it, that risk of "やけ" does not follow an act of seeking help or standing up for oneself but the decision to give up life, at least the life in his current form because he's also sick of being a carnivore (which is why I'm ultim
