There's also a movie based on this book (it's awful - don't recommend) in addition to a TV series based on the general book series (it's...mediocre). My feelings on the TV/film adaptions aside, I really enjoyed this book. It was one of the first books I read in Japanese and while it hammered me with new vocabulary at the time, the grammar wasn't too tricky and I found it easy to follow along with. A lot easier than I expected.
The story flows usually swiftly. As for the language difficulty, it quickly gets very easy to understand, to the point I could just forget about the dictionary for whole chapters. Just a few topic specific words here and there, nothing too crazy. Good book.
