Starts off fairly simple, with the protagonist awakening in a locked room, having completely forgotten his identity. He is told that he has been involved in a cutting-edge psychological experiment, and shown a number of documents that may help him remember who he is. A large part of the book consists of these documents, which vary wisely in form, content, and style, and include material that is, let us say, rather far from the vernacular.
