(3.63/5)The Night is Short, Read in Chunks!
This is my Review in Progress. As of writing this I am about 20% of the way through and am loving ever bit of it. It has surreal elements as others have mentioned but it's generally a very easy to follow story (especially if you have seen the movie). It certainly isn't easy as there are rare kanji and grammar scattered throughout but nothing that has kept me from enjoying this year long bar crawl (so far).
I still have another 80% of the book to read, but I encourage people looking for a challenge but something lighthearted. Books around this level tend to deal with really dark themes and while this book definitely brings up a lot of philosophical (and sophistic) concepts, I really enjoy the light atmosphere of it all.
As my title suggests, I think this book is best read in short sessions. I usually pick it up, read until the next 〇 and call it a session. Each day I try to read about 3 bits throughout the day. Obviously if you want to do more you can, that's just how I recommend doing it if you require some more look ups than the average reader.
UPDATE (50%): Getting to Chapter 3, I feel the book amps up its reader level pretty significantly and I struggled to get through much of it. I will keep this review up, but just know that I will return in the fall to try again!
The life is short, little reader, read something else.
I was not aware this book would be as surrealistic as it is. I don't like surrealistic literature and once more, this book confirmed this.
It's not badly written and doesn't use extremely difficult language, but because of the non-sensical elements it ends up being a fairly challenging read, imo.
There is an anime movie and I would recommend watching that before (or instead of) reading the book.
If you like surrealistic stories, this might be for you. If you don't, I recommend you read something else.

Great ass book
I really enjoyed reading this book as a teen. I hope there are more books like this
