From a language difficulty perspective it should be noted that as of the time of me writing this I don't think there are ebook copies available, and the print version which I have has minimal (almost to the point of no) furigana. There are a lot of old fashioned names (people and places) as well as terms for clothing and such that are relevant to the Meiji and Taisho eras but not so much today.
From a 'reader of nonfiction' perspective I want to call out this is pop nonfic. This is written to entertain, the author includes his opinion quite a bit, and I have my doubts that things were rigorously fact checked. For the most part the newspapers are taken at their word for what happened, unless truly unbelievable. We have similar types of books in English so this isn't a complaint, just clarifying what kind on nonfiction it is.
From an enjoyment perspective - it was mostly fun! I did start to feel things dragging towards the end, perhaps being a bit bored of the subject, but it was a peek into historical Japan that was very "warts and all" so I enjoyed it.
