Why are we doing this...?
When Haruhiro came to, he was in the darkness. Not knowing why was he here, or where "here" even was. With him were others who also remembered little more than their own names. What they found when they came out of the underground was a world that was "just like a game." In order to survive, Haruhiro forms a party with others in the same situation as him, learns skills, and takes his first steps forward into the world of Grimgar as a trainee volunteer soldier.

I hesitated whether to give this book a 2 or 3. If you're feeling as frustrated as I was with the last book, you can honestly just read Ch 11 (it contains some probably important stuff with Merii), and then skip to the final chapter, and you will have missed very little of value. That last chapter is... A choice.
This book was a definite improvement over the last book, but it's still so drawn out, and I felt the need to skip huge sections (or sometimes entire chapters that were irrelevant). To the book's credit, the world building is quite interesting - it's one of the most excellent surrealist worlds I've come across. It's unfortunate that it came at a time when I was feeling really burnt out by the storyline.
Some of the side characters are interesting, some are just pointless and annoying. The party is still split for the majority of the novel, and most of them are kinda off for a while in some way (some even go like way off the deep end).
Anyway, I'm gonna take a break before reading the next two volumes (short stories, all of which sound interesting, and two of which will be relevant in the next book)
