I have mixed feelings on this.
The start is strong, but it doesn't really tell that story. It quickly pivots into a bog standard princesses-competing-to-win-the-throne plot. The whole middle section didn't do much for me at all. The end manages to pull things together and bring the tension up, but it still didn't really ring true and if felt like the author pulled their punches.
I'm a big fan of ancient-Japanish type settings, but this did feel a bit bland in terms of it being fantasy. Lots of
