A Milestone in the Saint's Quest and A Volume That Could Have Been the Series Finale
Entertainment: Continuing the tradition, this volume is the second part of the arc that began in the previous book. We catch up with Sei in the Hawke Domain right after the purification of the black miasmas swampconcluded in the last volume. It's revealed that these were the last swamps to be purified, essentially completing the saint's mission. The world has returned to its normal state, and the purpose for which Sei was summoned has been fulfilled. The volume starts with the usual relaxed chapters, including a banquet to celebrate the end of the expedition and a leisurely stay at the hot springs in the Hawke Domain. The narrative then shifts to the interesting part of Sei and Albert's return to the capital and the unfolding of events now that Sei no longer has eradication missions. There's a chapter on Sei's "career" evolution as a researcher at the medicinal plant research institute, followed by a humorous chapter on a theater outing with Yuri Drewes. Before the grand finale, we're treated to two engaging "behind the scenes" chapters: the first discussing the creation of the work annex for Sei, and the second serving as a lead-in to the final chapter where Sei and Albert's relationship finally culminates. They acknowledge their feelings and decide to marry, though the moment is marked by a mere embrace rather than a kiss... So typical of them...!
Language Learning: This volume probably features the most varied vocabulary yet, especially concerning sausage-making processes, cuisine, onsens, and the theater world. It's really nice from a language learning perspective, offering a fresh set of vocabulary after the series' thus far predictable linguistic landscape.
Overall: This is a delightful read, once again presenting a variety of interesting situations and story evolution. The last chapter could indeed have served as a conclusion to the series (it also corresponds to the end of the TV series' season 2). With Sei having completed her mission and her relationship with Albert now official, I'm eager to see what direction her adventures will take next. I hope that all the new characters introduced so far will have their moments to shine again, and that we'll explore even more new territories and engaging challenges.
