This is Kawabata's novelized account of a real-life game of Go between two top-level players. My copy had the diagram of the board at the back so you could follow along with the moves as you read -- the book describes the game at a level of detail that makes that a plausible thing to do, though it majors on psychological portraits of the two players and the mental aspects of the match rather than simply blow by blow move descriptions.
I recommend this book to the sort of people who think “novel
