A light police procedural
ヴァンパイア探偵 is set in 紅森市, a city notable in the book for its extremely high murder rate. Our protagonist is 桃田遊馬 (ももた・ゆうま), a police detective, who often reaches out to his childhood friend 天羽静也 (あもう・せいや), an antisocial scientist focused on researching blood who's popularly joked as being a vampire, for blood analysis during the cases he works on. Each of the four chapters is a separate case, and while there is an overarching narrative in the background threading them together, that narrative was fairly light for this first book.
The cases themselves were fairly light as well; the author definitely isn't going for any kind of hardcore murder mystery/police procedural here. Each one is wrapped up fairly quickly, though the last case I have a feeling we'll likely see more of in volume two. The only really technical vocab used was when 遊馬 is discussing 静也's findings on whatever he asked him to look into for a case, otherwise the vocab is quite plain. Grammar as well didn't stick out to me as anything noticeable.
I listened to the audiobook as I read along and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a full-cast audiobook, and I thought each actor did a great job.
