Io appears and invites Ashiya and a few of her friends, Nakatsu, Sano, and Kayashima, to help her clean up a villa. (With her brother Umeda relunctantly having to come along.) Everything starts out fine and dandy, up until Ashiya seems to catch the interest of a ghostly character.
My excitement when after six volumes, we FINALLY get a ghost! In the dramas, ghosts and spirits made several appearances, mostly for gags, and it really gave Kayashima some room to shine. I was super glad to see him get more screen time (or page time!) this volume.
Speaking of drama appearances finally showing up--HIBARI! (Kanna as well.) And my gosh, is Hibari just as eccentric and dramatic as she is in the show. And with Hibari brings a winter dance, where there just so happens to be an unfortunate lack of girls to boys ratio, leading Ashiya and a few other boys to play the part of girls! Can Ashiya keep her secret while wearing a dress? And can Hibari handle a boy winning the title of 'Queen' at the dance?
Seeing Ashiya and Sano all uwu with each other was cute. I was glad they got some time to dance together! Poor Nakatsu though x'D Mate never catches a break lol Hibari acting jealous of the boys was an interesting character aspect of hers, different than what I expected based off the shows, but I'm open to it! I'm curious to see how things will shape up with her in future volumes. (Her and Oscar butting heads was also a delight to see, love them!) I wish they actually SHOWED what happened at the end of the dance, with the king and queen awards though. I feel like that was missed character development for Hibari, and so much build up to only for it to be off-screen and explained later :')
Soon after the dance, Ashiya receives a letter to return home to her family. While catching up with her family, and Julia, she tries her best to maintain her secret from her parents. But a surprise visitor drops by, catching her completely off guard!
Major spoilers: Okay, color me shocked to see Gil pop up again! I really thought he was gonna be a one-off character back in volume 3, but lo-and-behold, he pops up again. I'm sure the author will be trying to push a love triangle, but mate, we all know the tropes by now, we know who's gonna win :P
The cliff hanger though was excellent! What a place to stop things at and get you itching for the next volume. Just how is Ashiya's stay in California going to fare when surprise after surprise keeps popping up? ;) I definitely enjoyed this volume more. Looking forward to seeing where things go from here! :D
For Japanese Learners:
As this is a series, my thoughts are the same as volume one, which you can read more about that + my thoughts on the series as a whole here: https://learnnatively.com/review/b012ff0d41/
