As a note I listened to the audiobook, I did not read the text.
I feel like this book didn't have a clear vision of what it wanted to be. It's partly short stories, partly overarching and connected, but the ending didn't feel settled to me. It's mysteries where you're introduced to multiple characters and their relationship dynamics and internal struggles but...it doesn't go that deep? And throughout all of this we keep getting reminded that the detective character/chef is soooooooo hot. Like omg. Wow what a face.
This. Is. Not. Relevant.
I expect that sort of thing from romcoms or something where a relationship is being baited but this is....not that. Or at least it didn't feel like it should be.
I honestly struggled to stay engaged with this book and continue listening.
Pros: It's relatively easy (caveat: I didn't read the text, maybe the kanji is hard. I don't know) and very repetitive, so I can see newer learners benefiting from it. The name "Beaver Eats" is hilarious. Also, it was pretty chill, and nothing too gruesome in my opinion.
Not for me, but I can see other people enjoying it as lighter reading/listening.
