Legendary. An homage to the mystery genre
What can I even say to describe this book? It's hilarious, charmingly self-aware, meta, makes you feel stupid but also makes sure to let you know it gave you more than enough clues to catch on to what was up. And it's truly brilliant and novel. A shining read that went on my all-time favorites shelf on Goodreads, joining 130 other books out of a total of 1800 -- a rare feat for a Korean book, and one only 3 others have accomplished.
The characters are incredible. Or, really, one character. 츠키요 the 명탐정 is easily the best female character I have read in a 본격 추리 소설. How can you resist a female detective who goes on long rants about real-life mystery novels, including the 관 series and Higashino Keigo's works? I found her hysterical, charming, and magnetic, although I could see her frequent injections being polarizing. She made me laugh out loud so many times.
This book is very smart. There is enough foreshadowing to make you kick yourself and wish you had read more carefully, wish you had studied up on the meta of mystery novels...
This book is the best mystery I have ever read, and it's no contest. (Note that not all Higashino books are mysteries, and my favorites of his are not either)
