This is in what I guess you might call the "little local mysteries" subgenre -- in each of the four chapters something happens, but they're often on the level of "neighborhood boy goes missing". There's mysteries to solve and a bit of Edo period detective legwork, but also a major theme is the main character and his plans to make a living, and just the general interaction between characters. This book is clearly also setting up to be the start of an ongoing series with more stories featuring the same cast.
The book is fairly generous with furigana, and there are a handful of internal illustrations which I liked.
