(4.37/5)korean grammar in use (beginning) is a solid introduction to korean grammar without having too little or too much content. grammar points are well explained without being confusing.
i went into this with the intent of reviewing, not learning these grammar points for the first time, and it is a resource i will use as a refresher if need be.
the example sentences are simple, concise, and stay that way up until the end, where sentences became longer and more reading was required. they are still easy to decipher though, they're just a bit longer. the exercises are straightforward and nothing more than the typical "fill in the blank", "match each picture to the corresponding picture", and so on. the vocabulary is simple, and there are english translations provided too.
the only issue i noticed was that some important nuance -- in my opinion -- is not mentioned. this was most prevalent in the "additional endings" section. besides that, it's a great reference and strong introduction to korean grammar!
Helpful but overrated
It has taken me 2 years to finish this book. Since then, I have I actually took TOPIK I and passed without finishing this book. I get this is seen as the holy grail for learners but I don't love this book.
Pros:
- Covers many grammar points grouped by usage.
- Concise explanations.
- Gives helpful tips.
Cons:
- I personally think this book is overrated. The Korean Made Easy series is better imho.
- The explanation language is concise but I don't think it's to be so complicated..formal?
- I personally didn't like the workbook sentences.
I think this book should only be used a grammar glossary which is how I use it. It's one of many resources I use to understand and review grammar points.
The first volume of Korean Grammar in Use covers all the grammar required for TOPIK 1 and 2. Each chapter focuses on one grammar point, and is only a few pages long, so it's fairly quick to read through.
First, there are a few example sentences in Korean, with the target grammar point in red, along with the English translations. The first audio track for the chapter contains the Korean sentences read by native speakers.
Next, we are provided with a detailed explanation of the grammar point in English (the Intermediate and Advanced books contain bilingual explanations). This can include information such as: its function and the English equivalent; where it appears in a sentence; how it attaches to other words and whether it changes depending on the letter preceding it; and the differences between similar grammar constructions. This section often includes several example sentences for clarification purposes, but no audio.
Following this, there are a few brief examples of how the grammar point is used in conversations. This is the content of the second audio track for the chapter. And finally, there are some short exercises for you to practice what you have learned. They are usually straightforward "fill in the blank" questions, with the answers at the back of the book.
Pros
- Covers a large amount of grammar, providing a solid foundation for your Korean studies
- The explanations are clear and concise
- Plenty of example sentences are provided for each grammar point
- All the sentences include English translations
- The explanations of the subtleties between similar grammar constructions and contrasting example sentences is invaluable
- Answers to questions are included (it's frustrating when textbooks don't provide any answers at all, or you have to purchase them separately)
- Great for learners who are self-studying
Cons
- Due to the sole focus on grammar, it can't be used on its own, but rather acts as a complement to other study resources
- Not all sentences have accompanying audio
- It's not particulary useful as a quick reference, especially as you progress through the other volumes (Korean Grammar for International Learners is a great reference book)
I don't feel as though the cons take much away from the overall appeal of the book, since no one textbook could possibly cover everything. If you want to focus on improving your grammar, I'd highly recommend this series.

Best Reference Book
Reading this front to back is a good activity, but the main advantage to it is that when you come across an unknown grammar point, you can generally find it in the table of contents and jump to the page that has a clear and concise explanation and list of examples.
