This book is both a struggle and a delight to read. The contents can be quite disturbing, but in my opinion none of it is superfluous as it all contributes to the philosophical and psychological themes Oe explores. The English title of the book is A Personal Matter, and while this is not autobiographical, there is a clear influence from Oe's personal life. I highly recommend once finishing this book to read Oe's afterword reflecting on the work. Before reading, I always recommend not to read
