(3.67/5)Polarizing
I understand why someone could rate this 5 stars, but I did not enjoy reading about morally repugnant characters making out in detail, domestic abuse and nonconsensual sexual activities. The unconventional narrative structure made the book drag a lot for me. I was definitely surprised by the ending, but it felt very anticlimactic compared to the way in which the criminal and method of crime are identified in 히가시노 게이고 novels, which I'm used to. I was torn about whether to give this 4 or 5 stars, but I'll be generous. This is the same author as 홍학의 자리, but it's not quite as good, though maybe it is better as literature. A crime novel with a fun structure without any padding so quite short for a novel. Kind of felt like the adult version of 죽이고 싶은 아이 in that a schoolgirl has been murdered and the story is unvieled to the reader through the interviews and actions of the people around her in the days/weeks following the murder.
The author really digs into the dark side of each character (and a girl was murdered) so it's not a feel-good novel but I like crime/noir and so I enjoyed it.
