I can't say if it's a bad book or not, but I really didn't enjoy reading it.
There are three stories basically - two focused around an island in southern Japan which is being oppressed by various Japanese regimes (WW2 era and somewhat before that when it was being controlled by Satsuma). The third is in space in the future. It's a very ambitious book, trying to tell a grand story with lots of myth and dreams and motifs and whatnot, and I felt like it would go somewhere interesting with it. Maybe it did? I was not very impressed where it ended up though personally, and skimmed the last part.
In terms of difficulty: It's quite readable, but would not call it easy.
