I equally loved and hated this story. Looking at BookMeter reviews this is something kids read in their elementary school literature classes and I can see why.
As for learning - the language is a bit old fashioned but there are several words normally written in kanji that are in kana here (at least for the Aozora edition). I expect you'll need a dictionary, but I don't think the grammar will trip up that much.

Language Learning
Not too bad grammar wise, although there's some slightly old-fashioned language.
Entertainment
This read to me like a typical folk tale/morality tale. Worth a read if you're interested in literature/culture since it seems to be well known.
