A perfect first novel!

CONTENT: A whodunit written for children, but charming and thoughtful nonetheless. The cast was cute and endearing. I personally didn't get much out of the mystery itself (it was obvious for an adult), but I liked following along as they collected clues.

LANGUAGE LEARNING: This was the very first novel I read in Japanese, and I thought it fit that role perfectly. It eased me into reading longer sentences and did not feature complicated vocabulary. In fact, I knew a lot of the vocab goi

Adorable children's mystery novel

I absolutely loved this book.

Language-wise, it was super approachable. There is a lot of repetition and the mystery is simple. I felt that each character was distinct, so it was easy to keep track of who was who. The physical copy also has lots of illustrations, so it is not very text-dense compared to other children's novels. I would recommend this as a first book for beginners trying to read prose.

An elementary (school) mystery

In 放課後ミステリクラブ we follow three school friends as they try to solve the mystery of "who dumped a whole bunch of goldfish in the school pool". The stakes are not high, granted, but I thought it was a charming book; the characters are all fairly distinct (with the exception of the narrator, maybe) and I thought the solution was a nice one.
