(4.63/5)Considered a classic it uses a lot of language you're not likely to encounter everyday and many words you're familiar with in kana will be written in kanji - this is pretty typical of the out-of-copyright writing on Aozora.
Creepy and engaging, absolutely recommend. My favorite 江戸川乱歩 short story.
This is my first older book, and everything I've read up to now caps out around ~31 difficulty on this site (barring some visual novels?), so I'm speaking from that perspective.
Definitely a very slow read for me, but not as bad as I expected. It's heavy on keigo, lots of kana words are in kanji, there are a few odd things that my yomichan dictionaries couldn't pick up on, etc. The worst of it comes in these long sentences of little clauses separated by commas that feel like they'll never end,
The language initially feels much more difficult than it actually is, because of respectful language and several kana-only words appearing in obscure kanji. I found that I only needed a few pages to get used to that, though, and the rest was easy to read, with no complicated grammar or obscure vocabulary.
The story itself is a little masterpiece. It sneaks up on you and makes you increasingly uncomfortable in a very unique way, while containing nothing traditionally horror-ish. I'm sure it will
A bit slow to get going but well worth it
It starts off a bit boring and mundane, but once it gets going it was great. That ending was chef's kiss! <3
I highly recommend listening to the youtube recording while reading as it makes the test much more accessible.
