(3.74/5)Read this with the wanikani book club.
This was a cute story about a granny who is in a little girl's body. There are slice of life scenes of Hinata interacting with the other kindergarteners, but there are also scenes having to do with Hinata remembering her past life. I was expecting it to be all slice of life, so I was actually surprised and a bit intrigued by the story gesturing at something deeper.
However, I doubt I'll continue this series at the moment- maybe I will if I feel like picking up something easy and familiar when there's a sale. Language learning-wise, the only barriers were mentioned in other reviews, but now there's a book club to help out so it shouldn't be too difficult.
Cute story, curious about the plot
I read this as my first book of 2024. I'd seen it show up in the global feed here and the premise hooked me in.
The main character is a preschooler with the memories of a grandmother, and the escapades so far remind me a bit of the earlier parts of 本好きの下剋上。There are hints that there is a larger plot in later volumes, but so far this volume has been mostly cute slice of life scenes with some comedy from the main character being 6 going on 86.
From a language learning perspective, it wasn't too challenge, though there are a few vocal quirks of the main character (the aforementioned っぺ) and there's one scene with a large string of German in katakana that threw me for a loop (to save you the lookup, ノイシュヴァンシュタイン城 is Neuschwanstein Castle. Also the main character comes out with old fashioned terms from time to time, some of which felt the need to explain them for the Japanese audience with footnotes, so I'm guessing they're not the most common. That said the footnotes are there, so if you understand the modern terms it will explain them for you.
So far I've only read the first volume, but after that I probably will check out the other volumes in the future.
adorable
This manga is one of my favorites. Mostly because its obviously adorable. Note that I've read all but the last volumes.
The manga is about a little girl, Hinata, who remembers her time as an old woman and grandmother in her previous life. The manga starts when the protagoinst Hinata is in her last year in kindergarten and follows her through the first years of primary school.
There are three aspects/type of stories to this manga:
- Comedy based on Hinata behaving like an old woman despite having the apperance a little girl
- Slice of life stories featuring Hinata, her friends and her family. In a lot of these, Hinata behaves largely age apropriate and you could have mostly the same stories without the rebirth aspect.
- Plot based on Hinata's memories of her previous life and her trying to settle her buisness and concern from that.
As mentioned, I mostly like this manga for being adorable and cute. That refers both to how the characters are drawn and written.
The reincarnation aspect is also interesting. It's not explored terribly deeply. But we do get stories about how she grew up as genious/perfect kid (being able to talk and take care of herself almost from the start), how this affects her older brother. And Hinata does feel sorry for her mother having an old woman for a doughter.
ebook: Note that the first official ebook volume (I bought it on bookwalker) has rather low image quality, making furigana hard to read and reading less enjoyable. Starting from the second volume the quality is much better.
language and difficulty: It's not a very difficult manga and has full furigana. However, its not 100% episodic and has some actual plot. That means that there will be a few scenes that you'll need to understand. Also, Hinata speaks in some kind of dialect, which I think is supposed to make her sound more granny-like. Though that is generally limited to ending her sentences in だべ or だっぺ.

nice isekai slice of life but from a granny perspective
A wonderful series that scratches a slow paced slice of life itch I've had. It follows a reincarnated grandma now as a lolibaba tackling kindergarten and teaching her classmates some old school wisdom. While the kids totally act more mature than kindergartners the interactions are sweet and there is some nice underlining drama and plot for Hinata-chan. For language difficulty, it's lower intermediate. Very basic language most of the time with the only trip up being the country accent.
