(3.50/5)Murder Mystery With Zombies
This story starts like pretty much every other murder mystery, teenagers gather at a hotel in the middle of nowhere. But when a cult releases a virus that turns the attendants of nearby festival into zombies the students have to try and survive the night without getting eaten themselves. Doesn't help someone in their group is murdering them!
The thing I liked most about this novel is the narrator is not the detective but the assistant. The "Watson", if you will.
The second thing I liked is that the zombie outbreak is completely unrelated to the murders. They're used as a way to keep the main characters in a close space together, but are also used throughout the story to drive up tension and drama.
An entertaining and suspenseful read with a number of unexpected twists!
I read along to the audiobook and the story just wasn’t for me (I just bought it as Chiba Shoya is the main narrator in the audiobook) but thought I’d leave some notes about the audiobook version.
The audiobook differs from the original text (I had it on kindle) quite often. It’s usually easy to tell where you are but sometimes gets quite confusing.
The actor for the culprit did a really good job in the last 30 mins or so of the audiobook. Really good stuff, even if I rolled my eyes a ton.
I’m probably just not built for murder mysteries because I couldn’t suspend my disbelief enough lol. It both surprised me and felt too obvious and on the nose at the same time? I didn’t hate it, it was just very out there and middling at best for me as someone who doesn’t read much in the murder mystery genre.
I did kinda like that the culprit had a guy turn into a zombie so she could kill him twice though. That’s kind of insane.

Not what I expected.
I wanted to read a murder mystery and it got overly complicated. Most of the dialogue was rather boring and was paced too slowly. Also, the zombies were necessary. After looking up the book, even native speakers found it very confusing. Unless you read the whole series, there is no payoff.
