The middle dragged a bit, and the book probably could have been 50-75 pages shorter, but the beginning and the end were a fair amount of fun. I listened to this as an audiobook, so ymmv if you're reading it.
As for language level, there's a bit of talks about shrines, but it's very minor, and for the most part there's not much outside of everyday vocab. There is, however, a lot of Kansai (I'm assuming Kyoto) ben in this. The narration is first person, and the main character speaks standard Japanese, but almost everyone else speaks Kansai ben.
