A Good Challenge
This novel is about Tachinana, a man in his late 20s who doesn't have much going on in his life besides working for a copywriting company. One day he's tasked to spy on a music school for two years, taking advance chelo classes and recording each season.
The copywriting and legal jargon of this novel makes it a good challenge for advanced readers. It did have one thing that really annoyed me, which was half the conversation was in quotes while half were in description text. It would have been very difficult to keep track of what was spoken and what wasn't without reading along with the audiobook.
The story itself is fine. It was honestly a breath of fresh air to not have a story about a troubled genius who finds passion thanks to a girl. But the mysterious "trauma" that stops Tachibana from playing chelo when he was a kid felt like a weak plot device. Tachibana is such a wet blanket that there wasn't much gripping me in the narrative, but I'm glad I finished it.
Good if you're interested in music and legal jargon. 3.5 stars
