This is a set of three humorous stories from 徒然草, a collection of essays by a monk from medieval Japan.
The first page, which provides an introduction to the 徒然草, is harder than the actual stories, mostly because of the vocab and historical context. I looked it up on Wikipedia before reading this which made it easier to understand.
The stories themselves are short and funny, although… man, these monks can’t catch any breaks!
(Note: there are quite a few place names involving shrines and temples, if you see a long string of kanji, it’s probably that.)
