Useful for writing formally in Japanese
While I like this book and the DoJ series as a whole, I'd say the Advanced book is the least useful of the bunch for the average Japanese learner.
There's quite a few grammar points in here that aren't actual "grammar" and I'm a bit puzzled as to why they're included. For example, 恐れがある: if you understand what 恐れ means, and you know what が and ある mean, then you already understand this expression. There are other grammar points like なんて and なるほど that are really more like vocabulary than grammar,

Essential Source to Advanced Japanese Grammar
The Dictionary of Japanese Grammar series is simply the best grammar series I have ever come across in any language. The authors do an excellent job of combining complex linguistic explanations, complete with examples of both correct and incorrect sentences. Everything is easy to understand, and while the focus of this volume is clearly on advanced students (N1), upper intermediates (N2) will also find a home here.
