"피 냄새가 잠을 깨웠다."
I read the last 100 pages in one sitting.
Yujin wakes up one day to the smell of blood. He is covered, head to toe, in dried blood with no memory of the night before. We follow him as he recovers his memories of his blackout, and find out more about his past as he reminisces.
The start, while exciting what with all the blood, was a little slow to me as I got used to the author's writing style. That said, I really enjoyed the writing!! I have a lot of sentences saved that were so interesting to me. The recurring imagery, motifs, and kind of philosophical questions it brought up made it a book I will be thinking about for a while...I also probably need to do a reread as I'm sure I missed some things.
The writing was really descriptive, and the tension was so good. I just read Pet Semetary, and while the MC's couldn't be more different, the tension and the reader knowing how it's all going to work out felt similar to me. You're along for the ride and watching in horror as your expectations keep being fulfilled. As least that's how it was for me...so in that way, it's different from your usual 추리 novel.
The book has A LOT of flashbacks, which did take me a bit to get used to. I had to reread some parts to be sure if it was a flashback or not. This could be confusing for language learners. It was a slow read at parts for me due to vocab too. Mostly vocab like ferry/dock/water/religion stuff due to where they lived and that the fam was catholic (i guess lol). Oh and some main characters are Yujin and Haejin... I def was confused about if they are boys/girls since the names could be either (they are boys!).
The author's note is a must read too.
I'm going to put a clearer description of the novel under spoiler-- I went in blind and I think it was really fun that way, so I will put it for those you want to know more before deciding to read tho it won't have actual spoilers (+ possible TW)
Yujin, our MC, has some sort of epilepsy that he takes medicine for. This medicine gives him terrible side effects, so sometimes he takes a break from it. Before he has a seizure, he usually can smell blood. So when he wakes up to the smell of blood, he prepares for a 'fit', but then ends up discovering that something terrible happened the night before. His memory of the night is gone, so he tries to uncover what really happened. I wouldn't say the book is gory, but I read a lot of horror/thrillers so I might be a bad judge. There is detailed description of murder
