(4.10/5)It`s an easy read for a beginner but quite heavy
The comedy is very dialogue driven and the speech bubbles can have some really long phrases, which making it a pretty slow read despite the easy vocabulary.
I`d recommend N4 students to try finishing this one before trying their hand at easier Novels such as 魔女の宅急便.
In my opinion much more difficult than most would have you believe
Some recommend this as a first manga. That's not a terrible recommendation. It has furigana, generally a simple plot, simple language, not much slang. And the anime was the first anime where I thought, "hey, I understood almost all of that".
However, and I'm not sure if this is more a problem with the more recent volumes, the magical stuff is quite difficult even for intermediate or possibly advanced learners. The way magic works here is quite original and creative, making it harder to understa
Easy, Fun, and Relaxing
This is a very fun manga/anime. It's great for beginners, probably best for those at the N4 level grammatically. You might have to look up a few words related to nature/magic/the countryside but it's not too bad. I'm at around the N3 level and I only looked up 30 words in the whole volume. Definitely recommended! The story is very relaxing and chill. I'd also recommend the anime.
Highly recommend this for a first manga!
This is a fantastic beginner manga. It has furigana on everything, relatively simple words and pretty standard sentences. I found this much more straightforward than the popular よつばと!when I first started reading. The Wanikani book club is great too, as the vocabulary sheet has extensive coverage.
It's also a nice story - it's about a young witch and her cat moving in with some distant relatives to start high school. There's not a ton of magic in this book - it's almost entirely slice of life,
My First Manga
After bouncing off Yotsuba&!, I really settled in and enjoyed this. I would place myself at around N4 and this was a perfect time to start it. It's been great for mining a lot of useful conversational words into anki.
The story is also very endearing and relaxing. A lot of times you can follow something from context without fully understanding everything as well.
