(4.35/5)A nice high school slice of life
Very enjoyable, the characters are nice and well written, and this is not a "we are holding hands for 15 mangas before kissing" type of romance.
Good first high school slice of life
It has furigana.
It's really great because there isn't much specialized hobby vocab or stuff like that that we often find in things like sports manga. It's just high schoolers doing high schooler things and the characters are really likeable and behave realistically. And the romance is great and feels natural.
I read this with the Absolute Beginners Book Club over on the Wanikani forums!
Language learning: This pick was a little more difficult than some of the ABBC picks due to the casual language/contractions. The Bookwalker version also has very difficult to read furigana like the last review mentioned. This makes it not ideal for one's very first manga, but not too bad if you've read some before already.
Story: I thought I wasn't going to like this very much since it's a highschool romance, but I enjoyed myself a lot. The characters are a lot more interesting than expected, and it seems like there's plenty of material to explore with more depth in the later volumes. I won't immediately continue to the next volume, but definitely will keep it on my list and may continue later!
Ended up binging the first volume in one sitting
Well, this was a surprise. The Absolute Beginner Book Club over at WaniKani forums selected ホリミヤ as their next book club choice, and I was vaguely interested -- so I checked it out since the first three volumes are free for a limited time on BookWalker.
The story really drew me in from the first chapters. The two main characters seem more real than you'd expect in a romcom, with private hidden lives and teenage insecurities providing rich soil for storytelling. The flow of the story and slow but steady progress made me keep turning the pages. I'll definitely keep reading.
The amount of lookups was very modest, as the language is as simple as it gets and the setting is a school environment, something most of manga readers have an incredible overexposure to. Certainly a good pick for Absolute Beginners Book Club in this regard.
However, there is another facet to consider, and a word of warning about the quality, if you're considering buying digitally: 振り仮名 is almost completely drowned out in compression artifact noise in the BookWalker release. It's extremely hard to read in places. This is far from ideal for someone who is just starting their native manga-reading journey.
Cute!
This was a fun reread of a series that I really like, but in the original Japanese version! I must admit, there were a few times were the nuances of the casual speech threw me off when the characters were talking to each other (probably since I've been reading novels with characters that speak quite formally a lot of the time...) but other than that this was a fairly easy read! The story and the characters are really cute - Miyamura's out of school appearance is gorgeous, not gonna lie. He and Hori's interactions are super fun and adorable. Anyway, recommended! Check this out if you haven't already.

A sweet and silly high school slice of life and a good starter manga
This first volume was a really sweet introduction to the series. The characters are lovable and easy to enjoy, and I enjoy the humor throughout the manga. Hori and Miya are nice characters, and I enjoy the blossoming friend group that begins to form after the school trip towards the end of the volume I read the first volume through book walkers free promotion that just ended at midnight JST. (8/8/2024)
There's full furigana throughout the manga, so it makes a good starter series for anyone looking to dive into native material. Hoping to dive further into this lovable cast in the near future!
