Orthodox fantasy about magic users fighting over the fate of the world. I really liked the beginning, but can't say I found the magic school stuff as interesting. Still good - might bump to 4 stars if the second book pans out well.
The magic system works like those trading card kids anime where monsters with magical abilities are summoned from cards to fight. Really you could probably adapt the whole thing to a kids' anime pretty easily - it's pretty black and white with the villains/good guys. It's well told though.
Edit: Apparently it's a spinoff from a card battler video game called カルドセプト, which explains a lot.
Difficulty-wise, should be pretty easy if you're comfortable with the genre.
