Cute movie
Arrietty sits somewhere in the lower end of my Ghibli rankings—I like it, but it doesn't quite hit the heights of the studio's best. The story follows tiny people living secretly under a family's house, going out at night to scavenge food and scraps while avoiding all contact with normal-sized humans, who supposedly bring danger. The real charm here is the imagination displayed. Everyday objects we barely notice become elaborate tools and obstacles for these miniature characters. It's genuinely interesting watching them repurpose our world at their scale. True to its characters' size, Arrietty tells a small story. Everything happens within a single house and garden, which feels a bit contained compared to Ghibli's usual sprawling adventures where protagonists advance against ever-expanding conflicts. Language-wise, this is beginner-friendly territory. I'd recommend it for N4/N3 immersion. Sitting at nearly 16k words myself, I found it almost too easy, mining only 6 new words.
