(4.60/5)Great movie, it took me about 4hours to watch it completely at around N4/N3 level.
Overall, I had an ok level of understanding. Out of the other movies I've watched at this stage, this was one of the most enjoyable even when you don't understand some sentences ( the part where Ishida is rejecting everyone on the bridge for example).
And for Nishimiya it was almost impossible to understand but most of her dialogues where quoted by the others around her.
A genuine masterpiece (泣)
I watched this in English before even considering learning Japanese. It's... good. I love the realism of how a person's depression and their actions affect their life. Every time I seem to watch it, tears just come out whether I like it or not. It burns deep into the heart's feelings.
Language Learning
- This movie has quite useful vocabulary for new Japanese learners. Recommended for around N4 level. I wish I had watched this earlier but now I guess I unfortunately already knew most of the vocabulary before going in.
For grammar, I think the hardest I could remember was a ずに grammar point (usually not taught to learners at around N4) at some point but I don't remember quite well. Stay safe of it in any case. Keep a grammar dictionary around!
I did something to challenge me in this movie which was disabling subs when I didn't need them. I was looking to improve my speech recognition which actually worked quite well. People don't talk much and 硝子... well, it's okay, you can ignore her for the most part. I recommend challenging yourself if you can do it.

一番のえいが!
I've seen the movies dozens of times with English subtitles, so it made it much easier to connect what they are saying with the Japanese subtitles. Also, it is very slice of life type of deal, and realistic in conversations (according to many others online, as I don't speak Japanese natively and fluently obviously). Overall, a great movie for Japanese language learners! It's one of those movies you'll want to rewatch often! すばらしいえいが!
